Giovanni’s Room to receive Historical Marker

Pa. Historical Marker for Giovanni’s Room

Gloria Casarez, Philadelphia Mayor Nutter’s Director of LGBT Affairs, reported on March 18^ththat the Pa. Historical Commission had approved the application for a historical marker to be placed at the store. It will read: Founded in 1973 and named after James Baldwin’s second novel, Giovanni’s Room served as a bookstore, clearing house and meeting place at the onset of the lesbian and gay civil-rights movement, a time when one could be ostracized, arrested, or fired for loving someone of the same gender. Letters in support of the application were provided by Gloria Casarez of the Mayor’s Office; Meryl Levitz, President and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corp.; Jack Ferguson, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau; Mark A. Segal, Publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News; Tami Sortman, President of the Philadelphia Gay Tourism Caucus; and Franny Price, Executive Director of Philly Pride Presents, Inc The efforts of these people and organizations led to this extraordinary honor for the store. Ed Hermance, store owner, says he is humbled by the recognition, knowing that the lgbtq community in Philadelphia has many worthy individuals, associations and businesses that have contributed mightily to the success of our community in this city and far beyond. He would like to emphasize that the store’s work did not end in 1973. He would like to recognize the many hundreds of people who have been owners, staff members and volunteers for the past 37 years, for they have defined the store and made it what it has become since those first brave and sometimes scary days. The thousands of customers from around the world, too, have played their part, not only being the reason the store exists but also stepping up with money for the down payment for the first building when, in 1979, no one would rent appropriate space to the store. More recently, from 2009 to the present, hundreds of people have worked hard enticing thousands of people to contribute almost $50,000 to reconstruct the front wall of the store. Receiving the support of so many is surely the greatest honor the store could receive.

The store continues to fulfill many of its original purposes: being a visible, public lgbtq presence in the City of Brotherly Love; providing a comfortable, receptive space for Philadelphians’ and visitors; and offering a selection of the best current lgbtq culture available in print and on video.

In the past the store fulfilled critically important needs that are now not needed so much. In the early 1980s gay stores began to open in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, joining women’s bookstores. In those days no distributor in those places recognized a market for glbtq books or even most feminist books, so for a period of about 15 years Giovanni’s Room was the principal source of American lgbtq books and of many American feminist books for those countries. That business continues to this day, but at a reduced level, as major US and foreign distributors started taking notice in the late 1990s. As part of that international outreach, every manager of London’s gay bookstore, Gay’s the Word, has come to stay with Hermance and to work in Giovanni’s Room before taking up his duties in London. Co-workers at Berlin’s gay store, Eisenherz, have complained they have heard a little too much about how things are done in Philadelphia from their co-workers who had been to Giovanni’s Room.

What is the future of the store?

It invites people to sign up for the various kinds of emails the store sends out:Announcements of new book and movie releases for: Women, Men, Bisexuals, and Transgender folks Announcements of upcoming events Monthly bestseller lists.

The store’s website, updated weekly with new arrivals, includes the most closely categorized and current lists of new books available anywhere. (For at least a year, the first book Amazon.com suggests on the subject of homosexuality is A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Homosexuality. Do you need to support a company as amoral as they are?)

The store website uses the database of the largest book distributor in the country, so people may order any of 2.3 million books online to be sent or for store pick up.

Beginning in January of this year, people may order any of some 3 million e-books through the store website. Virtually any e-reader can download e-books from the website, except Amazon’s wholly-owned Kindle.

The store will continue, of course, to present some 50 author readings a year, host book clubs, Holler! Open Mic Night, receptions for the lgbtq caucuses of national organizations meeting in Philadelphia, groups of students from schools and colleges, provide wholesale services for schools and libraries, direct tourists to their destinations, do its best to give triage counseling for people in trouble, and provide advice on books and movies enriched by more than 100 years of staff experience.

There will be a ceremony when the marker is dedicated, but no date has been set. There’ll be at least one band for the occasion, and it won’t be complete unless you’re there too.
